Kaapi & Karam · Guide for international visitors
100% Pure Vegetarian · No meat, no eggs
KnK Private · First floor · Two minutes from Charminar
Charminar is extraordinary and it is exhausting. It is hot, it is loud, the lanes are narrow, and there is nowhere obvious to sit down. KnK Private is a closed, air-conditioned room on the first floor — booked in advance, kept for your group alone, with the doors shut on the street.
The kitchen is 100% pure vegetarian — no meat and no eggs are used anywhere in the building, at any time. For Jain, Hindu and vegetarian travellers, that removes the entire conversation before it starts.
Most visitors do Charminar, Mecca Masjid, Laad Bazaar and Chowmahalla in one morning, and by midday they want three things: somewhere cool, a clean toilet, and food they do not have to ask questions about. Those three are genuinely hard to find together within walking distance of the monument. That is the whole reason this room exists.
Hyderabad reaches the low forties in May. The room is fully air-conditioned and closed to the street — not a fan, not an open frontage. Somewhere to actually recover before the afternoon.
Maintained, Western-style washrooms. If you have travelled in India before you already know why this is listed second rather than last. For many groups it is the deciding fact.
No meat and no eggs are used anywhere in the building. There is no separate kitchen, no shared oil and no shared pan — so there is no cross-contamination question to answer, because there is nothing to cross-contaminate from.
One booking sits on the floor at a time. No strangers walk through, no other party is seated. Comfortable for families, for women travelling together and for guests who would rather not be looked at.
Booking, the menu explained, spice adjusted on request, and someone to talk to about the itinerary. You will not have to translate your dietary requirements at the table.
Parking near Charminar is close to impossible. On a KnK Private booking we arrange it — send the vehicle details ahead and the driver is told exactly where to go and when to come back.
A quick, self-service South Indian café. Fine if you are two people passing through and want a dosa and a coffee.
A closed room reserved for your group, with a menu agreed before you arrive and service at the table.
There is no lift in the building. KnK Private is up a staircase. If someone in your party cannot manage stairs, tell us when you book and we will seat the whole group on the ground floor instead — but it is a different, more public room, so decide with that in mind.
This is not an allergen-free kitchen. Milk, wheat, nuts, lentils and a full range of spices are handled daily in the same space. Jain and vegan planning is straightforward; a serious nut or gluten allergy is a conversation to have with the booking team before you confirm, not on the day.
This is the plan we run most often for visiting groups. Every stop is within a ten-minute walk of the room, so nothing needs a vehicle once you have arrived. Charminar opens at 9 AM and the first hour is the only quiet one — which is the argument for starting early rather than sensibly.
Vehicles drop at Gulzar Houz. The monument opens at 9, and the hour before it does is the only time you will photograph it without a thousand people in the frame.
Drop-off to Charminar · 3 min walkOne of the oldest mosques in India, built with bricks from Mecca. Cover your head and shoulders; shoes come off at the entrance. Photography is generally permitted outside prayer times — ask first.
Charminar to Mecca Masjid · 2 min walkThe bangle lane, and the perfume shops behind it. Bargaining is expected and good-humoured. If you want a lac-bangle demonstration at a family workshop rather than a shop counter, that can be arranged in advance.
Mecca Masjid to Laad Bazaar · 4 min walkThe pause the morning needs. Air-conditioned, doors closed, a clean washroom, somewhere to put the shopping down. Filter coffee in a steel tumbler, and a chance to sit before the afternoon.
Laad Bazaar to KnK Private · 5 min walkThe Nizams' courtyards, and a clock wound by the same family for over a century. Allow an hour — it is the best-preserved thing in the quarter and the one most people wish they had given longer.
KnK Private to Chowmahalla · 8 min walkA curated pure vegetarian South Indian and Deccani menu, agreed with you in advance. Jain, allergy and dietary requirements handled at the planning stage rather than at the table.
Chowmahalla to KnK Private · 8 min walkVehicles called to a coordinated pick-up point, so the group leaves before the afternoon congestion sets in around Charminar.
A hotel can give you a nicer room. Nobody else near Charminar can put a working artist, a bangle-maker or a genuine archive in it. These are arranged through the Kalakriti network and need seven days' notice — a craft workshop has to expect you.
Oil-based perfumes, made here for four hundred years. Consistently the thing overseas visitors remember longest — ahead of the monuments, every time.
A demonstration at a family workshop in Laad Bazaar rather than across a shop counter. You watch it being made, which is a different thing entirely from buying one.
Hyderabad, the Deccan and Telangana — history from someone who works on it, or a session built around the Kalakriti Archives. Music and poetry sittings also arrangeable.
Running a shorter visit? The two-hour version is kaapi upstairs, a walk to Charminar and Laad Bazaar, and lunch back in the room. The full-day version adds Salar Jung Museum in the afternoon.
Tell us your dates →Most guides tell you what to see. Very few tell you whether the ice is safe, what to wear at the mosque, or what a meal actually costs. Here is the honest version, including the parts that are not flattering.
Sealed bottled water is available at ₹20 a litre and can be put on the table for your group on a private booking. It arrives sealed; open it yourself if you prefer.
ICE_POLICY
If you would rather have drinks without ice at all, say so when you book and it will be noted with the rest of your dietary requirements, not asked again at the table.
South Indian food is aromatic more than fiery — sambar and rasam are tamarind-and-pepper rather than chilli-forward. The chaat is the spicy end, and it is meant to be.
Ask for mild and the kitchen will actually make it mild, not politely ignore you. On a private booking the whole menu can be set gentler in advance, which is easier than negotiating dish by dish.
The entire building is pure vegetarian — no meat, no eggs, anywhere, ever. Nothing to check, nothing to ask twice.
The restaurant has no dress code at all — come as you are, in whatever you have been walking in.
The Old City around it is another matter. For Mecca Masjid, cover shoulders and knees, and women should carry a scarf for the head. Shoes come off at the entrance, so slip-ons make the morning easier than laces.
Cash, UPI and cards are all accepted, and a GST invoice is issued for group and corporate bookings.
Private bookings are confirmed against an advance payment — the reservations team will tell you the current method when you book. Keep some cash for the bazaar; the bangle shops are not card-friendly.
Not expected, and not built into the price. If the service was good, rounding up or ₹50–100 per table is generous and normal. There is no obligation and nobody will look at you strangely either way.
The Old City is busy, crowded and completely normal to walk through in daylight. You will be looked at, and occasionally asked for a photograph — that is curiosity, not a problem. A polite no works fine.
The room itself is alcohol-free, air-conditioned, with a well-lit entrance and staircase, staff in uniform and CCTV in the common areas. Solo women travellers and women's groups use it regularly.
Morning, if you have the choice. Hyderabad reaches the low forties Celsius in April and May, and the Old City has almost no shade. Charminar opens at 9 and the first hour is the only quiet one.
We open at 6 AM, which means you can eat before the monument opens. Ramzan evenings are extraordinary and extremely crowded — worth planning for rather than stumbling into.
Photograph freely in the restaurant and in the bazaar. At Mecca Masjid, ask before photographing inside, and not during prayers.
If you have a car, send the vehicle number and driver's phone when you book and we will coordinate the drop-off and tell the driver where to wait. Parking around Charminar is otherwise close to impossible.
There is no lift in the building. KnK Private is up a staircase. The ground floor is at street level.
If someone in your party uses a wheelchair or cannot manage stairs, tell us at the time of booking and we will seat the whole group downstairs. Also worth knowing: the streets immediately around Charminar are narrow, uneven and busy.
For reference, ₹1,000 is roughly US$12 — so a full private breakfast for eight people, with the room to yourselves, comes to about the price of two main courses in most European cities. Rates move; treat the conversion as indicative.
Yes. The kitchen is 100% pure vegetarian. No meat and no eggs are used anywhere in the building, on either floor, at any time. There is no separate non-vegetarian section, so there is no shared oil, no shared pan and no cross-contamination question to answer.
Sealed bottled water is available at ₹20 a litre and can be placed on the table for your group on a private booking. It arrives sealed, so you can open it yourself.
ICE_POLICY
If you would rather avoid ice entirely, say so when you book and it is noted with your other requirements.
South Indian food is aromatic rather than fiery — sambar and rasam are built on tamarind and pepper more than chilli. The chaat is the spicy end of the menu. Ask for mild and the kitchen will genuinely make it mild, and on a private booking the whole menu can be set gentler in advance rather than negotiated dish by dish.
Yes — Jain preparation, without onion and garlic, on advance notice. It needs separate pans and separate tempering, so tell us at the time of booking and say how many guests need it, not just that some do.
Possible, with planning — but it genuinely needs discussing before you book. Ghee, curd, butter and milk are used widely in South Indian cooking, so a vegan menu is a real piece of work rather than a substitution at the table. Say so when you enquire and the team will tell you honestly what the menu can be.
No. The kitchen handles milk, wheat, nuts, lentils and a full range of spices every day in the same space. We are not an allergen-free facility and will not pretend to be. If someone in your party has a serious allergy, speak to the booking team before confirming so you can decide with the facts.
Same building, two very different rooms. Kaapi & Karam's ground floor is a walk-in, self-service café — open to anyone, no booking, often busy. KnK Private is the first floor: a closed, air-conditioned room reserved in advance for one group at a time, with table service and a menu agreed beforehand.
Yes — KnK Private is by advance reservation only and walk-ins are never seated upstairs. 48 hours' notice minimum, or 7 days if you want a heritage walk or a craft session built in. The ground floor downstairs needs no booking at all.
4 to 24 guests. The smallest package starts at four, so a family or a couple of couples can book it. Above sixteen, the flat-rate full floor buyout at ₹20,000 usually works out better than per-guest pricing.
No. There is no lift in the building — KnK Private is up a staircase. The ground floor is at street level. If someone in your party cannot manage stairs, tell us when you book and we will seat the whole group downstairs instead. It is a more public room, so decide with that in mind rather than on arrival.
Yes. The room is alcohol-free, air-conditioned and closed to the street, with a well-lit entrance and staircase, staff in uniform and CCTV in the common areas. Women's groups and solo travellers use both floors regularly. In the Old City outside you will be looked at out of curiosity and occasionally asked for a photograph — a polite no is completely normal and fine.
Downstairs is inexpensive by any standard: masala dosa ₹80, filter kaapi ₹30, a full thali ₹99.
KnK Private is priced per guest by package: from ₹499 for a two-hour heritage breakfast, ₹999 for the Charminar Heritage Experience with a guided walk, up to ₹1,999 for full delegation hosting — or ₹20,000 for the whole floor. See packages and prices.

No, and it is not built into the price. If the service was good, rounding up or ₹50–100 per table is generous and normal. Nobody will think anything of it either way.
About two minutes on foot — roughly a hundred steps. We are beside Sardar Mahal and opposite the BSNL building. The Plus Code is 9F6G+GG, which you can type into Google Maps without a data connection.
Say: “Sardar Mahal ke baju, BSNL ke saamne — Kaapi & Karam.” Every driver in the Old City knows both landmarks, which works far better here than an address. Or show them the Plus Code, 9F6G+GG.
Parking is arranged on a KnK Private booking — send the vehicle number and the driver's phone when you book and the team coordinates the drop-off and tells the driver where to wait. Parking around Charminar is otherwise close to impossible, which is a large part of why groups book the room.
Yes — a guided Old City walk can be built around the meal, with Mecca Masjid, Laad Bazaar and Chowmahalla all within ten minutes on foot. Lac-bangle and attar sessions can be added, curated through the Kalakriti network. Allow seven days' notice, because a guide and a workshop both have to be booked.
Morning, if you can choose. We open at 6 AM, three hours before Charminar does, and the first hour at the monument is the only quiet one. Hyderabad is very hot in April and May, and the Old City has almost no shade — an early start and a cool room at 11:30 makes an enormous difference to how the day feels.
No dress code at the restaurant — come as you are. For Mecca Masjid nearby, cover shoulders and knees, and women should carry a scarf for the head. Shoes come off at the mosque entrance, so slip-ons are easier than laces.
