“Charminar has always served stories.”
Neel Sharma, marketing lead, speaking to The Hindu — A new vegetarian cafe near Charminar in Hyderabad’s Old City

It ran in the Hyderabad print edition first, under a headline that got the whole proposition into eleven words: filter coffee at Charminar, freshly made ghee dosas, guided heritage walks. The online version followed six days later.

The Hindu came by after the walk everyone does near Charminar — the bangles, the ghararas, the hunt for something older than the traffic — and found what that walk has always been missing at the end of it: a clean vegetarian table and a cup of filter kaapi.

Downstairs is not trying to impress you

No fancy interiors, no decor to photograph. It is a quick-service place and that is deliberate. South Indian tiffins in the morning — idli, upma, uthappam, dosa made crisp and fresh with an honest amount of ghee and not a drop more. You will not find bondas or puris; that is a choice, not an oversight. In the evening, Delhi-style chaat: Bombay toast, alu toast, vada pav, pani puri by the plate.

Three combos carry the middle of the day — a South Indian thali, an unlimited thali and a veg biryani. The most expensive thing on the menu is the unlimited thali at ₹129. That is the whole pricing philosophy in one number, and it is why the regulars are not tourists but people who live here.

Upstairs is reservations only

K&K Private, the upper floor, is a different proposition entirely: book readings, meetings, curated events. Reserved in advance, closed to the street, and built for people who came to do something rather than only to eat.

More than a café

What the piece captured that a menu never could: we will arrange the rest of your day, not just the meal.

  • Guided heritage walks through Charminar and the lanes around it
  • Curated shopping assistance at Laad Bazaar and the Charminar localities
  • Introductions to reliable local tour operators
  • Talks on Hyderabad’s history and culture
  • Art workshops — for tourist groups and corporate groups alike

Where and when

Kaapi & Karam is near Sardar Mahal, opposite the BSNL office, a short walk from Charminar. Open 7 am to 11 pm. Walk in downstairs; reserve upstairs.
